During our research into the ironing station, seven fellow students and I realized that there was no suitable solution for people in wheelchairs. Our target group are people whose disabilities start from the waist down, who run their own household and therefore do not receive any help while ironing. At the beginning we dealt with the standard sizes and heights in order to create an initial basis for our ironing board. In a further step, we determined the reach of the arms of seated people and thus also wheelchair users in various studies. In order to ensure that escape routes are followed, we have agreed on a swivel mechanism. As a result, the ironing board can be folded up very quickly and is not an obstacle. The prototype of our ironing board is characterized by the fact that it is space-saving and light. Due to the height-adjustable base, it can be placed under any table top. The swing-out ironing board is also equipped with a parking brake. In addition, the angle of the support arm is kept steep, as this creates as much space as possible for the wheelchair user under the table. For the development of the iron, we first made clay handles while sitting in order to generate the most pleasant possible movement. Another challenge was to enable left- and right-handed people to use the iron equally without finding the shape/ergonomics annoying.
